Help me explain

Support for describing personal experiences

In 'Help me explain', a child or teenager can choose a topic, write in their own words and put together a text for a conversation. They can read it aloud or show it to someone they wish to talk to. The tool can be used independently or with you.

Ask how the child or teenager wants to use the text and whom they wish to share it with. Choices and text are processed in the browser. On a shared device, you can clear the tool using 'Start again' when finished.

For use in conversations and teaching

Start with questions and understanding

Start with what the child or teenager wants to know and what they already understand. Choose a topic together, work through the explanation and make time for questions.

In teaching, you can use general examples and explain words and concepts. Make arrangements for personal questions to be discussed privately.

Knowledge about the body and menstruation matters to the whole group. In learning about boundaries and consent, both girls and boys need to respect other people's choices, take responsibility for their actions and know how to get help for a friend.

Use these resources alongside professional judgement and workplace procedures. Adapt language and content to age, existing knowledge and individual needs. When a specific health concern arises, an appropriate healthcare professional should assess whether follow-up is needed.
