Periods and cycles

Why does my period come at different times?

It is common for the number of days between periods to vary, especially during the first few years after your first period.

Period pain

Why is my period so painful?

Period pain is common, but severe pain that affects everyday life deserves to be taken seriously.

Bleeding

How can I tell whether my period bleeding is heavy?

It can be difficult to know how much bleeding counts as heavy. Often it is easier to look at how the bleeding affects everyday life.

Hormones and feelings

Why does my mood change so much before my period?

Some people notice clear changes in mood, energy or physical symptoms before their period. If these changes follow the menstrual cycle, they may be PMS.

Genital health

How can I tell whether my vaginal discharge is normal?

Vaginal discharge is fluid from the vagina and a normal bodily function. Its amount, colour and consistency can change through the menstrual cycle.

Genital health

Why does my genital area itch, burn or smell different?

Itching, burning or a noticeably changed smell can be caused by irritation, changes in the natural bacteria or infection, among other things.

Pain in the genital area

Why does it hurt in or around my vagina?

Pain in the genital area can come from the skin, mucous membranes, muscles or organs in the pelvis. There are many possible causes.

Sexual health

Why does sex hurt during or afterwards?

If sex hurts, you can stop and get help finding the cause. Pain can come from the skin, muscles or other parts of the genital area.

Contraception

Can contraception affect my periods or how I feel?

Hormonal contraception can affect bleeding and cause side effects. The changes people notice vary from person to person.

Contraception and mental health

Can hormonal contraception affect my mood?

Some people experience changes in mood after starting hormonal contraception. It is important to take these changes seriously.

Pregnancy

I'm afraid I might be pregnant. What should I do?

If pregnancy is possible, there are practical things you can do. You do not have to wait and worry alone.

The body

Why am I getting more body hair, spots or other physical changes?

During puberty, the body produces more hormones. These affect the skin, hair, sweat, breasts, body shape and menstruation, among other things.

Periods and energy

Why do I become so tired during my period?

Some people feel more tired around menstruation. If you bleed heavily or the tiredness is severe, it may also be important to investigate whether you have an iron deficiency.
