Sex and sexual health

Consent and respect for your own and others' boundaries.

Children need knowledge about their own boundaries and practice respecting other people's. Have these conversations with girls and boys, using examples appropriate to your child's age.

Understanding the situation

With younger children, you can talk about hugs, touching and play. Ask before hugging, let your child choose and show that you respect the answer. When someone wants a game to stop, everyone stops.

For teenagers, consent means that everyone wants the sexual contact and chooses freely. Ask if you are unsure. Consent to one activity applies to that activity, and anyone can stop at any time. Silence and lack of resistance do not automatically mean consent. Sexual intercourse without consent may be rape, including between partners and without physical violence. Someone who is asleep or unable to resist intercourse due to severe intoxication cannot consent.

Turning knowledge into action

What you can do

  • Practise with an everyday scenario: A friend laughs while being tickled but says stop. What do you do?
  • For teenagers: You have kissed, but the other person goes quiet and turns away. Discuss stopping and asking.
  • Talk about how the teenager can resist peer pressure and seek help.
  • Respect your teenager's privacy. The discussion can focus on hypothetical situations.

Find a way to start

One way to begin

“How can you give the other person a real choice? What do you do if they want to stop?”

Use your own words and give your child time to respond. A short conversation can be a good beginning.
