Women's health
What is adenomyosis?.
Adenomyosis is a condition of the uterine wall that may cause pain and heavy menstrual bleeding.
Understanding the situation
With adenomyosis, glandular tissue from the uterine lining is found within the muscular wall of the uterus. It is different from endometriosis, although some people have both.
Adenomyosis is more common in adults but can occur after menstruation begins. A doctor assesses the symptoms and may use ultrasound or MRI as part of the investigation. Treatment is tailored to age, symptoms and needs.
