Contraception and pregnancy

Pregnancy and available choices.

A positive pregnancy test can bring many emotions. Your teenager needs support, clear information and room to express their own wishes.

Understanding the situation

If the teenager wants to continue the pregnancy, a GP or midwife can begin antenatal care. If they want an abortion, they can contact a hospital's gynaecology department directly.

In Norway, abortion is available on request up to and including 17 weeks and six days of pregnancy. Pregnancy duration is usually counted from the first day of the last period and assessed by the healthcare service. The pregnant person decides, including when under 16; specific rules govern information provided to parents.

Turning knowledge into action

What you can do

  • Ask what the teenager needs from you right now.
  • Help them promptly contact healthcare professionals and access information about the options.
  • Respect the teenager's decision and offer practical support.

One way to begin

“I want to help you get information and support. What do you think yourself, and whom would you like to speak to?”
