For employees and managers
Find a way forward together.
Sick leave follow-up involves staying in touch, exploring work opportunities and finding solutions that can work over time. Review the milestones, prepare your conversation and create a working draft for further follow-up.
1. Where are you in the process?
These dates are indicative milestones for one continuous period of absence. If there are breaks or changes in the degree of sick leave, particularly the timing of dialogue meeting 1 must be clarified. The tool does not calculate sickness benefits or NAV's final benefit date.
Choose both dates to see the milestones.
4 weeks
Follow-up plan
The employer and employee prepare the plan together, normally within four weeks. This applies to full and partial sick leave. The plan is shared with the certifying clinician within four weeks. Exceptions apply when the plan is clearly unnecessary.

Dialogue meeting 1
For full sick leave, the employer should normally hold dialogue meeting 1 within seven weeks. The meeting assesses possibilities for work and updates the plan. Exceptions apply when the meeting is clearly unnecessary.

NAV assesses the activity requirement
Work-related activity should be considered as early as possible. At eight weeks, NAV checks the activity requirement. Exceptions may apply for compelling medical reasons or when the employer documents that workplace adjustments are impossible. The certifying clinician documents medical reasons.

Dialogue meeting 2 with NAV
NAV should normally hold dialogue meeting 2 within 26 weeks. NAV considers whether the meeting is clearly unnecessary. Either party can request an earlier meeting. The follow-up plan is shared with NAV before dialogue meetings and whenever NAV requests it.

A past milestone does not, by itself, indicate which obligations have been met or which exceptions apply. NAV can be contacted earlier when assistance is needed.
2. Prepare a conversation about work
- Which tasks would you like to remain involved with?
- What needs to change for work to be manageable?
- How could you describe your needs using specific situations at work?
- Would you like to bring a union representative or another support person?
A possible opening
“I would like to discuss which tasks work now and what we could adjust. Can we try some specific measures and agree when to review them?”
3. Agree on adjustments and review the results
Make the measures specific. Describe who follows up, when an adjustment should be in place and how you will assess whether it helps. With partial work participation, hours, pace and tasks may all need adjustments.
This is a date you agree yourselves, in addition to relevant statutory milestones.
4. Take your working draft forward
Download a text file that can be opened in a word processor and printed. Agree on the contents together and transfer the relevant information to NAV's or the employer's follow-up plan. Share the final plan through your organisation's approved channels.
When needs vary over time
For recurring symptoms, you can agree on a basic arrangement and alternatives for more difficult days. Describe which work tasks and demands require adjustment and how changes will be agreed.
Work ability may change during assessment, treatment and recovery. Let the employee’s experience and specific working conditions guide the conversation. A diagnosis or life stage alone says little about what a person can do.
For long-term or chronic illness with increased absence risk, and certain pregnancy-related sickness absences, NAV may consider covering sickness benefits during the employer period. Eligibility is assessed individually.
